In 2026, a 42-year-old woman was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment at Leicester Crown Court after being convicted of repeatedly abusing a young child over a five-year period, having been brought to justice after posting a hypocritical comment on social media.
Gemma Baker, residing at Wheeldale Close, Leicester, appeared before Judge Timothy Spencer KC for sentencing on Friday 30 October 2026 following an investigation conducted by Leicestershire Police. Her sentencing followed a contested Crown Court trial that concluded on Thursday 29 October 2026, where jurors returned unanimous guilty verdicts across 10 charges.
The prosecution, led by Nicholas Corsellis KC, detailed that the offending occurred between 1999 and 2004. During this timeframe, Baker systematically targeted a young girl who was aged between six and 11 years old, subjecting her to repeated sexual abuse.
In recorded video testimony presented during the trial, the victim described an assault during which Baker touched her inappropriately underneath her nightclothes. The victim recalled crying and explicitly telling Baker that she was hurting her, but Baker completely ignored her distress and continued. The victim explained that Baker never explicitly warned her to stay silent, relying instead on the young child being too terrified and overwhelmed to tell an adult.
The victim attempted to put the childhood trauma behind her and proceed with her adult life until she came across a public comment Baker posted on Facebook. In the social media post, Baker publicly complained about another convicted child abuser, claiming that the individual had received an insufficiently lenient prison sentence.
Recognising the profound hypocrisy, the victim contacted Baker directly via private message, stating: “You’re lucky it’s not you doing a prison sentence.” Upon later discovering that Baker had children of her own living in her household, the survivor made the decision to report the historic abuse to Leicestershire Police in 2021 to ensure child safeguarding measures were enacted.
Detectives from the force’s specialist safeguarding units initiated an extensive inquiry, interviewing witnesses and recovering evidence that culminated in formal charges against Baker.
Baker denied the allegations throughout the legal process, but a jury rejected her claims and convicted her on all counts:
10 counts of gross indecency with a child
Passing sentence, Judge Timothy Spencer KC addressed the serious breach of trust, the prolonged period over which the abuse occurred, the vulnerability of a six-year-old child, and the enduring psychological impact inflicted on the survivor.
The judge ordered Baker to serve an immediate custodial term of six years’ imprisonment.
In addition to the prison term, Baker was made subject to indefinite statutory notification requirements under the Sex Offenders Register and long-term preventative safeguarding restrictions.
