In 2026, a 47-year-old registered sex offender was sentenced to two years and nine months’ imprisonment at Maidstone Crown Court after repeatedly breaching public protection orders, tampering with device monitoring software, and amassing further child abuse media.

Asa Canterbury, residing at Banbridge Court, Maidstone, appeared before the court for sentencing on Monday 26 October 2026, having entered guilty pleas to an indictment comprising multiple safeguarding breaches and child exploitation offences.

The prosecution outlined that Canterbury was initially placed on the Sex Offenders Register and made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) in May 2024 after admitting to the possession of indecent images of children. Under the statutory terms of the orders, Canterbury was required to provide full transparency regarding his identity, living circumstances, financial accounts, and digital devices.

Following an intelligence-led review by Kent Police monitoring officers, detectives executed an arrest warrant at Canterbury’s Banbridge Court residence on 23 September 2025. A comprehensive forensic audit revealed that Canterbury had engaged in a calculated effort to conceal his activities from law enforcement.

Inquiries established that Canterbury had failed to declare his use of several alternative names, maintained undisclosed internet-enabled hardware, operated multiple undeclared bank accounts and payment cards, and maintained hidden social media profiles and user handles. Furthermore, specialist forensic analysis demonstrated that Canterbury had actively interfered with and compromised monitoring software installed on his mobile phone to prevent police oversight. During the search, officers also seized devices containing new photographs and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children.

Canterbury entered formal guilty pleas to:

  • Breaches of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order
  • Breaches of Sex Offenders Register notification requirements
  • Possession of indecent images of children

Lead investigator Mark Deacon, of Kent Police, stated:
“Whilst not all sexual offenders go on to commit further crimes, we take no chances and keep a very close eye on those who are deemed to pose a risk to children. Asa Canterbury was well aware of the terms of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order and notification requirements but he tried to get around them by using a variety of different names, and by trying to keep numerous other details and belongings secret from us. He now understands that there is no hiding place from the law and that if he commits further offences following his eventual release from prison then he will soon find himself back behind bars.”

Passing sentence, the Crown Court judge emphasised that court orders designed to protect children from sexual harm must be strictly adhered to, and that deliberate concealment and software interference will be met with immediate custody.

The judge sentenced Canterbury to an immediate custodial term of two years and nine months’ imprisonment, reminding him that his SHPO and statutory notification obligations will resume upon his release on licence.
