In 2026, a 40-year-old woman was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment at Minshull Street Crown Court after she and her partner were exposed for surreptitiously filming and photographing an underage child for their own sexual gratification.

Lara Boyd, aged 40, appeared in the dock alongside 41-year-old Andrew Boyd. The court heard that to colleagues and acquaintances, the defendants projected the outward image of a respectable, hard-working, middle-aged professional couple. In reality, the pair were living a depraved lifestyle heavily fuelled by the consumption of gallons of alcohol and substantial quantities of cocaine, whilst harbouring a predatory sexual interest in a young child.

The criminal conduct came to light after law enforcement agencies tracked the transmission of an illicit image online back to an internet protocol address registered to their home address. Greater Manchester Police executed an operational search at the premises, seizing an array of digital hardware including an Apple iPad, an iPhone, a laptop computer, and a PlayStation 4 games console.

Digital forensic specialists conducted extensive examinations of the confiscated hardware, identifying indecent photographs and video recordings of the child. The prosecution established that the media had been captured surreptitiously, entirely without the victim’s awareness or consent.

Further interrogation of internal messaging applications revealed disturbing WhatsApp chat threads exchanged between Lara Boyd and her husband. The messages confirmed that the underage child was the explicit subject of their sexual appetites, with the images shared privately between the couple for their mutual sexual titillation.

In a moving victim impact statement placed before the court, the young victim explained that the defendants would never truly understand the catastrophic harm they had caused, disclosing persistent psychological trauma and recurring nightmares stemming from the violation.

During the sentencing hearing, the court observed that Andrew Boyd sat staring at the floor while Lara Boyd wept throughout proceedings.

Lara Boyd entered formal guilty pleas to:

One count of voyeurism

One count of publishing an obscene article

Two counts of making indecent images of children

Her co-defendant, Andrew Boyd, admitted voyeurism, publishing an obscene article, two counts of making indecent images of children, two counts of distributing indecent images of children, and possession of an extreme pornographic image.

Passing sentence, Judge Tina Landale highlighted the gravity of the defendants’ covert abuse, describing the case as extremely serious and noting the severe and enduring trauma inflicted upon the victim.

Judge Landale sentenced Lara Boyd to an immediate custodial term of two years’ imprisonment.

In addition to the custodial sentence, the court imposed statutory notification requirements, placing Boyd on the Sex Offenders Register alongside complementary protective orders designed to safeguard the public and the victim.
