In October 2026, a 41-year-old man was convicted at the High Court in Livingston after being found guilty of raping three children over a seven-year period in West Lothian.

David Smith stood trial facing an indictment detailing serious child sexual abuse committed between 2013 and 2020.

The Crown detailed that Smith deliberately targeted three boys who were aged seven, 10, and 11 years old at the time of the attacks, subjecting them to repeated rapes and exploitation. On Monday 26 October 2026, following deliberations, the jury returned guilty verdicts across the charges.

Detective Inspector Jennifer Priestley of Police Scotland remarked following the verdict:
“Smith showed a complete disregard for his victims, exploiting them for his own sexual gratification.
“I want to acknowledge the strength of the victims who provided information to police in this case. Smith’s conviction is down to them. I hope this sentence brings them and their families some comfort.
“We take all reports of sexual abuse seriously, regardless of the passage of time.
“We remain committed to supporting victims of sexual crime and protecting children from harm and abuse.”I would urge anyone who is a victim of abuse to speak to police in the knowledge you will be listened to, taken seriously and fully supported.”

The presiding High Court judge deferred formal sentencing to allow for the preparation of background criminal justice and risk assessment reports.

Smith was remanded in custody ahead of the sentencing hearing, where he faces a lengthy custodial term alongside mandatory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register.
