In October 2026, a man and a woman from Colchester were sentenced to a combined total of 23 years’ imprisonment at Ipswich Crown Court after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent for systematically starving a primary school-aged boy.

The defendants, whose identities are legally protected to ensure the anonymity of the young victim, were sentenced on Friday 23 October 2026 following a complex investigation by the Essex Police Child Abuse Investigation Team.

The court heard that the abuse came to light in May 2020 during the initial Covid-19 national lockdown when social services intervened and located the child. The boy was found locked inside a small box bedroom where he had been confined day and night for multiple months. The room contained no bedding, no clothing, and offered no sanitation or toilet facilities.

Medical examinations upon his emergency hospital admission revealed that the child was critically underweight, unsteady on his feet, visibly shaking, and displaying severe muscle wastage. Examining doctors confirmed that the boy was effectively reduced to skin and bones, warning that without immediate medical intervention, the starvation would have proved fatal within days.

Digital forensics specialists recovered videos and photographs from devices within the residence that established the boy had been deliberately deprived of food and subjected to severe neglect between January and May 2020.

Essex Police collaborated with the Crown Prosecution Service to charge both individuals with Section 18 grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent rather than offences under child cruelty or neglect legislation, ensuring the indictment reflected the gravity and premeditated nature of the harm inflicted.

Detective Inspector Luke Baldwin of the Essex Police Child Abuse Investigation Team remarked:
“This poor little boy was locked in this tiny little box bedroom day and night for a period of months.
“He had no bedding, he had no clothing, he had no access to a toilet, and he was systematically starved, to the point where he was effectively skin and bones, and at the cusp of life.
“Hopefully he feels that justice has been served. He’s been looked after, he’s being supported and has a loving family who have shown him what love and a family is.”

Passing sentence, the Crown Court judge highlighted the cruelty and calculated confinement of the victim before sentencing the male defendant to an immediate custodial term of 12 years’ imprisonment and the female defendant to an immediate custodial term of 11 years’ imprisonment.
