A 24-year-old man from Hull has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment at Hull Crown Court after being convicted of blackmailing a vulnerable teenage girl with indecent images.

Ahmed Jalal, of Grove Street, Hull, was sentenced by Judge John Thackray KC following a trial concerning offences committed in Cleethorpes.

The prosecution outlined that Jalal deliberately identified and targeted the young victim, exploiting her vulnerability through coercive intimidation. Jalal threatened to release indecent photographs of the child, knowing that the pressure would cause immense distress and that she would find it extraordinarily difficult to seek help from her family. The offending was eventually halted after the victim disclosed the blackmail to friends, who assisted in contacting the police.

Jalal denied the allegations, entering not guilty pleas to:

One count of blackmail

Two counts of taking an indecent photograph of a child

One count of possessing an indecent photograph of a child with a view to distribution

During the trial proceedings at Grimsby Crown Court, Jalal represented himself after his legal representatives withdrew from the case. On 4 September, the jury returned guilty verdicts on all four counts on the indictment.

At the sentencing hearing at Hull Crown Court, the court heard that Jalal, who had no previous criminal convictions, offered no mitigating statements.

Sentencing him, Judge John Thackray KC observed that Jalal had effectively admitted the core elements of the offences while giving sworn evidence, stating:
“You targeted a particularly vulnerable victim. It caused substantial distress to this young girl.”

The judge highlighted the severe psychological harm inflicted upon the child and handed Jalal an immediate custodial sentence of four years’ imprisonment.

Under standard determinate sentencing rules, Jalal will serve half of his sentence in custody before being eligible for consideration for release on licence under probation supervision.

To ensure long-term public protection and prevent further harassment, the court ordered that Jalal be made subject to indefinite notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life. Judge Thackray KC also imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order with comprehensive restrictions and issued a five-year restraining order barring any contact with the victim.
