A 42-year-old man from Colchester has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment at Chelmsford Crown Court after being convicted by a jury of 11 sexual offences against a child committed over a two-year timeframe.

In 2021, Essex Police launched an inquiry after receiving a report concerning sexual abuse involving a child. Daniel Mowle, of Apprentice Drive, Colchester, appeared for sentence on Friday 23 October 2026 following a contested trial.

The prosecution detailed that Mowle carried out a series of sexual offences against the victim over two years. Following a complex investigation, Mowle was arrested, interviewed, and charged with multiple counts on the indictment.

Mowle entered not guilty pleas, forcing the complainant to give evidence at trial in September. On 18 September 2026, the jury returned guilty verdicts on all counts:

Two counts of sexual assault of a child

Seven counts of sexual activity with a child

Two counts of inciting sexual activity with a child

Following the conclusion of proceedings, the survivor described her experience:
“I have never felt more loved and supported in a single moment. I looked around and all my family, friends, the officer and my ISVA were beaming and just so happy for me.
“Even the judge told me that none of what happened was my fault. It was brilliant to hear that.
“But I know I would not have been able to set one foot in that courtroom without the unwavering support of Caroline, my Independent Sexual Violence Advisor, and Hayley, the detective who led the case.
“Hayley supported me so much, she was fantastic and I could not have had a better officer.
“She was rooting for me the whole time and I can’t put into words how grateful I am for her support and commitment to my case.”

Detective Constable Hayley Green, who led the investigation for Essex Police, remarked:
“I would firstly like to pay tribute to the strength and resilience shown by the survivor throughout what has been a lengthy and traumatic process.
“Daniel Mowle never faced up to the damage caused by his actions, choosing instead to put her through a protracted and difficult trial process and it is my hope that his conviction and sentence will draw a line under this awful chapter for the survivor, allowing them a chance to put this case behind them and feel that justice has been served.
“It is never too late to come forward to tell us about abuse you have suffered. You will be heard.”

Passing sentence, the Crown Court judge addressed the violation of trust and the trauma inflicted on the young victim, handing Mowle an immediate custodial term of 10 years’ imprisonment.

Under statutory provisions governing determinate sentences for serious sexual offences, Mowle will be required to serve at least two-thirds of the sentence in custody before being considered for release on licence under probation supervision.

To safeguard the public and ensure continuous monitoring upon release, the court ordered that Mowle comply with indefinite notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register and imposed strict long-term restrictions.
