Three men have been sentenced to a collective total of more than 20 years’ imprisonment at Worcester Crown Court after preying upon a female student and subjecting her to rape and sexual abuse in Clent.

Arjan Purewal, 23, of Wolverhampton Road, Oldbury; Jaskaran Thandi, 23, of HMP Hewell, Redditch; and Hassan Jangheer, 23, of Grenville Drive, Smethwick, appeared for sentence on Friday 9 October 2026 following an extensive inquiry conducted by West Mercia Police.

The prosecution outlined that the three defendants targeted the female student in the Clent area of Worcestershire before subjecting her to a serious sexual attack.

Following their identification and arrests by detectives, the case proceeded through the Crown Court system. In March 2025, following a contested jury trial, Purewal was convicted of rape, blackmail, perverting the course of justice, and possessing an identification document with improper intention. Further charges on the indictment against Purewal—alleging conspiracy to rape a female and sexual assault on a female—were ordered by the court to lie on file.

Co-defendants Thandi and Jangheer stood convicted of aiding and abetting the rape, as well as separate counts of sexual assault committed against the victim.

Passing sentence on Friday 9 October 2026, the Crown Court judge highlighted the predatory nature of the attack on the student and the severe impact inflicted on the survivor. The judge sentenced the three men as follows:

Arjan Purewal was handed an immediate custodial sentence of eight years and six months behind bars. This comprised seven years and six months for rape, one year consecutive for perverting the course of justice, one year concurrent for blackmail, and eight months concurrent for possession of a fraudulent identity document. Purewal was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Jaskaran Thandi was sentenced to six years and four months’ immediate custody for aiding and abetting rape, with a concurrent term of two years’ imprisonment imposed for sexual assault.

Hassan Jangheer was sentenced to six years’ immediate custody for aiding and abetting rape, with a concurrent term of two years’ imprisonment for sexual assault.

The court further ordered each defendant to pay a statutory victim surcharge of £228, imposed notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, and directed that strict statutory licence supervision conditions apply upon any eventual release from prison.

Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all victims and complainants connected to sexual offence proceedings are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, educational facilities, or photographs capable of leading to public identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.
