A 47-year-old convicted sex offender of no fixed address has been returned to prison after exposing himself to members of the public at Newcastle Central station a mere three weeks after being released from custody.
Paul Southern appeared for sentence at Newcastle Crown Court on 6 October 2026 following an investigation conducted by British Transport Police (BTP).
The prosecution outlined that on the evening of Tuesday 18 August 2026, Southern arrived at Newcastle Central railway station. After sitting on a public station bench for a short period, Southern intentionally exposed his genitals in full view of passengers and commuters at approximately 9.30pm.
A member of railway staff witnessed the indecent conduct, approached Southern, and immediately contacted British Transport Police. Attending officers arrived swiftly, detaining Southern on the platform before transferring him into police custody.
During subsequent interviews under caution with BTP detectives, Southern made full admissions, stating directly that he had travelled to Newcastle Central station with the deliberate objective of exposing himself in public.
The court heard that Southern had only been released from prison three weeks prior to the incident. On 26 March 2026, he had received a four-month custodial sentence following a conviction for voyeurism after BTP officers caught him hiding inside the station’s female public conveniences in February 2026.
Southern pleaded guilty to:
Exposure
Failing to comply with sexual offender notification requirements
Passing sentence on 6 October 2026, the Crown Court judge noted the immediate repeat offending and blatant disregard for court-ordered monitoring, sentencing Southern to four months’ immediate custody.
The court also ordered Southern to re-sign the Sex Offenders Register for a period of seven years under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, with statutory supervision requirements to follow upon his release.
Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all victims and complainants connected to sexual offence proceedings are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, or photographs capable of leading to public identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.
Southern stood convicted of:
Exposure
Failing to comply with sex offender notification requirements
Sentencing outcome and statutory measures:
Four months’ immediate custody
Re-registration on the Sex Offenders Register for seven years under the Sexual Offences Act 2003
Enforceable post-custodial statutory licence supervision conditions upon release from prison
