A 25-year-old man has been handed an 18-and-a-half-year extended sentence after being convicted of breaking into the home of a 94-year-old woman and subjecting her to a horrific sexual assault.
Tyler Clarke, of HMP Doncaster, appeared for sentence on Monday 3 August 2026 following a forensic-led investigation conducted by South Yorkshire Police.
The prosecution outlined that the offences occurred in December when Clarke carried out a night-time burglary at the bungalow of 94-year-old Sheila Wood. During the break-in, Clarke subjected the vulnerable victim to a depraved sexual assault inside her own home and ransacked her belongings.
Crime scene investigators conducted exhaustive forensic examinations of the premises, recovering latent fingerprint impressions belonging to Clarke from several items, including a bedroom chest of drawers and a picture frame. Evidential DNA swabs obtained from the victim also yielded a direct profile match to Clarke.
Enquiries to apprehend Clarke led officers to execute a warrant at a residential property in the Balby area of Doncaster, where detectives discovered Clarke hiding inside a wardrobe. A subsequent search of the address located a hat matching the garments worn by the suspect on CCTV footage seized in the vicinity of the crime scene.
Clarke was formally arrested, charged with burglary and sexual assault, and remanded into custody.
The victim, Sheila Wood, tragically passed away earlier this year prior to Clarke being sentenced. In an emotional impact statement presented to the court, Sheila’s family paid tribute to her memory and described the catastrophic consequences of Clarke’s actions:
“Tyler Clarke blew up our lives, destroyed our family’s peace and set a terrifying domino effect in motion that dimmed and then permanently extinguished Sheila’s bright light. Her little bungalow was her safe haven and it was there that he not only physically attacked her, but attacked her in the worst, most depraved way imaginable. After the attack she could never go back home. She would never feel safe there again. He stole her home, her independence and her peace of mind. As a family, we are carrying a horror and a grief that nobody should ever have to think about when they close their eyes at night. This act has terrified us all and will leave a forever-lasting impact on so many people.”
Passing sentence on 3 August 2026, the Crown Court judge designated Clarke a dangerous offender and imposed an extended determinate sentence of 18-and-a-half years. Clarke was ordered to serve 13-and-a-half years in immediate custody before being eligible to apply for parole, with the remaining five years to be served on extended licence in the community under strict supervision. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, victims of sexual offences are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity from the moment an allegation is made. However, because the victim, Sheila Wood, has passed away and her family have formally spoken out in tribute, statutory anonymity provisions concerning her identity have ceased.
Clarke stood convicted of:
Burglary
Sexual assault
Sentencing outcome and statutory measures:
18-and-a-half-year extended determinate sentence (13-and-a-half years’ custody and five years on extended licence)
Mandatory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for life under the Sexual Offences Act 2003
Dangerous offender post-custodial statutory licence supervision conditions enforceable upon release from custody
