A 34-year-old registered sex offender from Atherstone has been sentenced to one year and four months’ imprisonment at Stafford Crown Court after repeatedly breaching public protection orders and providing false information to conceal his past convictions from a new partner.
Danny Richardson, of Atherstone, Warwickshire, appeared for sentence after entering guilty pleas to nine separate charges relating to notification failures and order violations investigated by Staffordshire Police.
The court was told that Richardson’s criminal record originated in 2015, when he was convicted of making and possessing indecent images of children in Tamworth. Following that conviction, he served an immediate custodial sentence and was subjected to mandatory lifelong notification requirements under the Sex Offenders Register, as well as a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
In 2024, public protection officers launched an inquiry after intelligence indicated that Richardson was not declaring his true residence and movements. Detailed investigations revealed that Richardson had deliberately provided false address details to law enforcement so that his new partner would remain unaware of his criminal background and previous child sexual offending.
Further checks established that Richardson had taken proactive steps to circumvent monitoring. He adopted an unnotified alias, opened a new bank account without alerting police, and maintained access to an undisclosed secondary mobile phone, all of which represented serious breaches of his statutory registration conditions and preventative court order.
Following his arrest and interview, Richardson admitted the breaches in full.
Under the provisions of Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all child victims and protected subjects connected to criminal proceedings are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, educational facilities, or photographs capable of leading to public identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.
Richardson pleaded guilty to:
- Six counts of failing to comply with Sex Offender Register notification requirements
- Two counts of supplying false information in purported compliance with a notification requirement
- One count of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) / interim SHPO
Passing sentence, the Crown Court judge handed Richardson an immediate custodial term of one year and four months’ imprisonment.
Alongside the custodial sentence, the court ordered:
- Ongoing enforcement of the Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO)
- Mandatory continued notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register under the Sexual Offences Act 2003
- Statutory post-custody licence supervision conditions upon release from prison
