A 34-year-old serial offender from Colwyn Bay who subjected his partner to severe physical beatings, constant digital surveillance, and strangled her until she lost consciousness has been sentenced to four years and five months’ imprisonment at Caernarfon Crown Court.

Matthew Green appeared for sentence after admitting controlling or coercive behaviour, intentional strangulation, breaching a domestic abuse protection order, and criminal damage committed against his partner, Katie Beard.

The court was told that Green established absolute dominion over Miss Beard’s daily routine through fear, intimidation, and isolation. He compelled her to provide live location tracking data via smartphone apps, mandated that she leave FaceTime video calls running while she slept so he could supervise her room, and ordered her to barricade her bedroom door from the inside to verify she had not left the house. In addition to isolating her from her support network of family and friends, Green extorted substantial financial sums, demanding payments of £100 at a time and costing the victim thousands of pounds.

Prosecutors described persistent physical assaults committed by Green, who repeatedly punched Miss Beard in the head and face, often during the night. The repeated blunt force trauma left her with a permanently crooked nasal bridge and chronic breathing complications.

On 24 November 2025, at a hotel premises in Llandudno, Miss Beard confronted Green concerning messaging exchanges with another woman. Green responded with extreme violence, seizing her around the neck with both hands and applying sustained pressure. Miss Beard gasped for air before losing consciousness. Upon regaining awareness, Green lied about the assault, asserting that she had suffered an unprovoked medical seizure.

The violence continued despite court intervention. In the early hours of 9 July 2026, in clear violation of an active Domestic Abuse Protection Order, Green went to Miss Beard’s family residence. He launched a brick through a window—narrowly missing her father—kicked the front entrance, bellowed threats to kill her, and inflicted substantial criminal damage on vehicles parked outside.

In impact evidence presented to the court, Miss Beard explained how the relentless abuse shattered her self-esteem, stripped away her independence, and ruined her university education. Photographic evidence detailing extensive facial bruising, abusive voice recordings, and CCTV footage depicting Green chasing Miss Beard along a public street while she screamed were placed before the bench. The court heard Green had a criminal record comprising 25 previous convictions spanning 40 offences, with significant history involving threats to kill, violent assaults, and harassment.

Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992 and Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933, any protected complainants, victims of sexual violence, or children connected to criminal court proceedings are entitled to automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Disclosing, publishing, or broadcasting identifying details, names, addresses, educational facilities, or photographs relating to protected individuals is strictly prohibited under UK law.

Green pleaded guilty to:

  • Controlling or coercive behaviour
  • Intentional strangulation
  • Breach of a Domestic Abuse Protection Order
  • Criminal damage

Sentencing Green, Judge Nicola Jones stated that his strangulation assault could easily have killed the victim, condemning his sustained campaign to maximise fear and control.

The judge handed down a total sentence of four years and five months’ imprisonment:

  • Three years and nine months for controlling or coercive behaviour
  • Two years and three months for intentional strangulation, ordered to run concurrently
  • Eight months consecutive for breaching the Domestic Abuse Protection Order
  • No separate penalty for criminal damage, treated as an aggravating feature of the overall offending

Under statutory sentencing guidelines, Green will serve up to 50 per cent of the determinate sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for release on conditional licence under probation service supervision.

The court also enacted comprehensive protective orders:

A 10-year Domestic Abuse Protection Order strictly prohibiting Green from approaching, contacting, or referencing Miss Beard, or attending any location where she resides, works, or studies

10-year restraining orders prohibiting any contact with or approaches towards Miss Beard’s parents
