A 33-year-old man from Leeds has been handed a 19-year prison sentence at Leeds Crown Court after being convicted of multiple rapes, assaults by penetration, and coercive control against three women.

Dale Knights, of Kirkstall Lane, Leeds, appeared for sentence on Thursday 1 October 2026. The hearing followed a protracted inquiry conducted by West Yorkshire Police’s Leeds Adult Safeguarding unit.

The court heard that Knights subjected one victim to severe sexual violence, comprising two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault by penetration. Further investigative work established that Knights engaged in prolonged patterns of domestic abuse against two other women, exercising coercive control over their lives alongside an admitted campaign of stalking.

Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all victims of sexual offences are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity from the moment an allegation is made. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, or images that could lead to the public identification of the complainants is strictly prohibited under UK law.

In a Victim Personal Statement read before the court, one survivor outlined the enduring trauma resulting from his attacks:

“The trial is now over, but for me, what happened has not ended. I have to live with the consequences every day.

“Since the crimes took place, I have suffered greatly with anxiety, depression and fear. I struggle with busy places such as supermarkets, city centres, parties and large events. I can become overwhelmed, shut down and experience panic attacks and seizures.

“There have been times when I have had to leave events, cancel plans and rely on other people to do things that I would previously have done without thinking.”

Knights was convicted of the following offences on the indictment:

Two counts of rape

Two counts of assault by penetration

Controlling and coercive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship (involving two victims)

Stalking (entered by guilty plea)

The trial judge handed down a total determinate custodial sentence of 19 years’ imprisonment. Under statutory provisions for determinate sentences in serious sexual offences of this duration, Knights will be required to serve at least two-thirds of the 19-year term in prison custody before the Parole Board evaluates him for conditional release on licence under probation supervision.

Alongside the custodial term, the court ordered:

Mandatory lifetime notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register under the provisions of the Sexual Offences Act 2003

Restraining orders barring any direct or indirect contact with the victims upon release

Investigating officer Detective Constable Kieren Overton stated:

“The offences committed by Knights, for which he has shown no remorse, were horrific and have had a long-lasting impact on his victims. I hope they have gained some comfort and closure in the long sentence he will be serving.

“I would like to praise the victims in this case for having the bravery to come forward and report their experiences to us, and the strength of character to see this through the court process.

“These women are an inspiration to others, and I would urge anyone who is a victim of sexual abuse, or who is concerned about someone else, to report it to us. We have specially-trained and dedicated safeguarding officers based here in Leeds who will listen to victims and take their concerns seriously.”
