Dafydd Piper, aged 21, of Maes y Felin, Wildmill, Bridgend, has been sentenced to three years and six months’ imprisonment at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court after admitting the rape of a young woman who repeatedly refused his advances.
The court heard that while the two had engaged in consensual contact earlier in the evening, the victim established an unambiguous boundary when Piper attempted to escalate the situation, telling him directly: “We’re not having sex.”
Prosecuting barrister Julia Cox told the court that Piper, who “clearly had sex at the forefront of his mind”, ignored her refusal.
When the woman attempted to move away, Piper lifted her onto his hips and climbed on top of her.
As the victim demanded, “What are you doing? Just get off. We’re not having sex,” and attempted to push him away, Piper forced her back onto the bed and raped her for approximately a minute before withdrawing.
Following the attack, the survivor confronted Piper over Snapchat, asking: “I said no and stop. Why did you carry on?”
Piper replied: “IDK. I’m sorry. I should have stopped.”
The victim then stated: “I was raped. I want you to remember that. I want you to take responsibility for what you did.”
When questioned by South Wales Police following his arrest, Piper initially denied wrongdoing, claiming the act was consensual and asserting that the victim had made a malicious allegation.
However, in the face of his own message admissions, Piper subsequently abandoned his defence and pleaded guilty to rape.
In a Victim Personal Statement read to the court, the survivor outlined the profound disruption the assault caused to her life, detailing persistent anxiety, isolation from friends, sleep deprivation, and frequent nightmares.
She stated: “He could tell I was vulnerable and took advantage of this. I will never forgive him for what he did to me and put me through.”
Although Piper had no previous convictions, Judge Jeremy Jenkins emphasised that immediate custody was unavoidable: “Rape is rape, and only a custody sentence for it can be justified.”
The judge sentenced Piper to an immediate term of three years and six months (42 months) in prison.
He was also made subject to a five-year restraining order prohibiting any contact with the victim and ordered to register with the police under the Sex Offenders Register for an indefinite period (for life).
Release Calculation: Under standard UK sentencing legislation governing determinate custodial sentences of less than seven years, Piper is subject to automatic early release provisions at the halfway point. He will be required to serve 21 months in prison custody before becoming eligible for release on licence to complete the remainder of the sentence under the supervision of the Probation Service.
