Matthew Watson, aged 26, of Tewkesbury Road, Newcastle, has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment at Newcastle Crown Court after being convicted of 11 child sex offences committed against a teenage girl.
The prosecution detailed that Watson targeted the vulnerable victim, plying her with alcohol and controlled drugs to compromise her ability to resist before subjecting her to sexual assaults.
The offending took place on multiple occasions at various locations across the Newcastle policing area.
The victim disclosed the abuse to trusted individuals, who assisted her in contacting Northumbria Police.
Specialist officers from the force’s Safeguarding Department launched a complex inquiry, gathering corroborating evidence that led to Watson being formally charged in April of last year.
Watson pleaded not guilty to all charges, compelling the survivor to undergo the ordeal of a Crown Court trial in August.
Following deliberations, the jury rejected Watson’s defence and delivered unanimous guilty verdicts on 11 counts of child sexual offences, including:
- Sexual activity with a child
- Causing or inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity
Speaking following the conclusion of proceedings, Detective Constable Claire Ashurst said: “It’s clear that Matthew Watson is a sexual predator who has taken advantage of this vulnerable girl for his own sexual gain. This victim-survivor has shown great bravery and dignity through the entire investigation and court process – which has now ended with her abuser being put behind bars.”
On Friday, 11 September 2026, the court sentenced Watson to eight years’ imprisonment (96 months).
Alongside the custodial sentence, the judge granted an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) placing strict, legally enforceable prohibitions on Watson’s contact with children, and ordered that he remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing determinate sentences of seven years or more for serious sexual offences, statutory release at the halfway mark does not apply. Watson is required to serve a mandatory minimum of two-thirds (64 months / five years and four months) of his eight-year sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence. Upon release, he will remain subject to strict licence conditions and supervision by the Probation Service for the remainder of the eight-year term.
