Matthew O’Kelly, aged 43, of Walton Road, Bushey, Hertfordshire, has been sentenced to 10 years and six months’ imprisonment at St Albans Crown Court after being convicted of serious child sexual offences and possessing over 1,600 child abuse images.
The former schoolteacher was apprehended in November 2025 following a targeted operation conducted by Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Child Online Safeguarding Team (COST), initiated after receiving an intelligence referral from another online investigation unit.
Specialist officers carried out digital forensic analysis on devices seized from his address, recovering a total of 1,640 illicit images and videos of children, alongside extreme adult material.
The recovered files comprised:
- 806 Category A images (the most severe abuse recognised under UK law)
- 390 Category B images
- 444 Category C images
- 43 extreme pornography images
The court heard that O’Kelly engaged in predatory online communication, utilizing explicit dialogue to coordinate abuse, unaware that some of the profiles he interacted with were undercover decoy accounts.
Police confirmed that O’Kelly’s employers assisted fully during the inquiry, with investigators confirming there was no evidence that any pupils at the school where he worked were affected.
Prior to trial, O’Kelly entered guilty pleas to three counts of making indecent images or videos of children, three counts of distributing indecent images or videos of children, and one count of possessing extreme pornography.
Following a Crown Court trial, a jury found him guilty of:
- Attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child
- Arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sexual offence
Detective Constable Tilly Parker of COST commended the outcome, stating: “I am pleased that O’Kelly has been caught and brought to justice, given he was in a position of trust as a schoolteacher. The possession of indecent images of children is not a victimless crime. Each image represents the abuse of a child and has a real-world impact. There is no doubt the world is a safer place for children now that he is behind bars.”
On Monday, 14 September 2026, the court sentenced O’Kelly to 10 years and six months in prison (126 months).
The judge also granted a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to remain in force for 20 years, imposing strict digital and operational restrictions upon his conduct.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing determinate sentences of seven years or more for serious sexual offences, statutory release at the halfway mark does not apply. O’Kelly is required to serve a mandatory minimum of two-thirds (84 months / seven years) of his 10-year and six-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible to apply for statutory release on licence. Upon release, he will serve the remaining three years and six months under the statutory supervision of the Probation Service in the community.
