In 2026, Jacob Berry, of Brierley Road East, Swinton, Greater Manchester, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years at Manchester Crown Court after being convicted of subjecting four women to sustained rape, serious violence, and coercive control.
The conviction concluded an extensive investigation by Greater Manchester Police into offences committed over a seven-year timeline between 2018 and 2025.
The police inquiry was initiated in April 2025 when a member of the public reported witnessing a woman being assaulted by a man inside a motor vehicle.
Although the initial victim was intimidated and hesitant to disclose the full scale of the offending, detectives uncovered further digital evidence of Berry’s abusive conduct broadcast online, prompting an arrest and a wider investigation that identified three additional victims.
The court heard that between 2018 and 2020, Berry subjected one victim to severe physical violence and multiple rapes.
During this period, Berry spat at her, strangled her, extinguished a lit cigarette on her face, and fractured her nose, requiring corrective surgery.
In 2020, Berry raped a second woman following a social gathering where her drink had reportedly been spiked.
Berry coerced his way into her life, subjecting her to sustained intimidation, spitting, biting, and standing on her neck during a paranoid search for mobile phone SIM cards.
The violence culminated in an incident where the victim’s elderly grandmother attempted to intervene and was knocked violently into a wall.
In 2022, Berry formed a relationship with a third woman, displaying aggressive and controlling behaviour toward her and her children.
Berry extorted money from her, damaged her property, repeatedly subjected her to serious sexual violence, threatened to release intimate photographs, and threatened to burn down her home.
Following a trial at Manchester Crown Court, Berry was convicted of:
- Seven counts of rape
- Four counts of controlling and coercive behaviour
- One count of assault by penetration
The sentencing judge noted the courage demonstrated by all four women in providing evidence against Berry, categorising him as a dangerous individual who posed an enduring risk to women.
The court handed down a sentence of life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 16 years, alongside indefinite restraining orders for the duration of Berry’s life to safeguard the four victims from any direct or indirect contact.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing indeterminate life sentences, Berry is required to serve at least 16 full calendar years in prison custody before becoming eligible to apply for parole consideration. His earliest possible parole review point falls in 2042. Release is discretionary and granted only if the Parole Board is satisfied that Berry no longer presents a risk of serious harm to the public. If released, Berry will remain subject to life licence conditions, lifetime sex offender registration, and multi-agency monitoring for the remainder of his life.
