Neil Shorter, then aged 56, of Bicester, Oxfordshire, was sentenced to two years and three months’ imprisonment (27 months) at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, after being convicted of sexual assault and a separate offence of stalking.
The prosecution followed an investigation led by the British Transport Police (BTP) alongside Thames Valley Police.
The court heard that on Tuesday, 13 August 2024, a young woman was waiting on the platform at Newbury railway station to catch a train home from work.
CCTV footage recovered from the station showed Shorter pacing up and down the platform in what investigators described as a pre-planned attack.
Shorter approached the victim, engaging her in a brief conversation under the pretence of asking for travel directions.
He walked away momentarily before returning and subjecting the woman to a sexual assault while her back was turned.
Shaken by the incident, the victim immediately reported the attack to a member of station staff and identified Shorter at the scene.
BTP detectives identified Shorter, who was already remanded in prison awaiting court proceedings for a separate stalking offence investigated by Thames Valley Police.
Officers arrested Shorter at the prison on 7 November 2024, formally charging him with the station assault.
Sentencing Shorter at Oxford Crown Court, the judge handed down a total custodial sentence of two years and three months (27 months).
The court also made Shorter subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing sexual offences, Shorter is required to serve two-thirds (18 months / 1 year and 6 months) of his 27-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for automatic statutory release on licence. His projected release date falls in February 2028, whereupon he will remain subject to licence supervision in the community until the expiration of the full term in November 2028.
