In 2022, Ephrem Kassay, then aged 38, of Newport, was sentenced at crown court to 10 years in prison after being convicted at trial of two counts of sexual assault and one count of actual bodily harm.
The court heard details regarding a Gwent Police investigation launched into a series of offences committed between January and February 2022. Prosecutors outlined how Kassay followed two lone women and a female child across three separate incidents.
During the first incident, the victim managed to escape from Kassay. In the second instance, Kassay followed and sexually assaulted a female child. In the third incident, Kassay pushed a woman off her bicycle and punched her in the face before subjecting her to a sexual assault.
Detectives investigating the case gathered evidence to bring Kassay to trial, where jury members returned guilty verdicts across all three charges.
Following the trial, the presiding judge handed down the custodial sentence.
On 17 November 2022, Kassay was jailed for 10 years, with investigating officers thanking the victims for their bravery and case details catalogued on the UK Register Database for public record transparency.
