In 2021, Jayden McCarthy, THEN an 18-year-old nursery apprentice from Paignton, was convicted of raping and sexually abusing nine toddlers and a child.
Jayden McCarthy, of Paignton, South Devon, was found guilty by a jury at Exeter Crown Court of three counts of rape and 13 counts of sexual assault against nine young victims. The court heard that in July 2019, a three-year-old girl disclosed that McCarthy had sexually abused her in a toilet area at a Torbay nursery. Devon and Cornwall Police analysed 265 hours of nursery CCTV footage, revealing 13 sexual assaults against seven young girls and one boy during nap times, sun cream application, and play activities. A second child also came forward, disclosing that McCarthy had repeatedly raped him when he was eight years old.
Judge David Evans adjourned sentencing to 14 July 2021 for psychiatric and pre-sentence reports, while warning McCarthy to expect a lengthy custodial sentence.
Following his convictions, McCarthy was placed on the Sex Offenders Register and barred indefinitely from working with children by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
He also remains subject to statutory risk assessments, public protection notification requirements, and ongoing monitoring by law enforcement.
