In 2021, William Rennie, a 29-year-old man from Forfar, was placed on the Sex Offenders Register after admitting to sending explicit messages and images to decoy accounts he believed belonged to young schoolgirls.
William Rennie, of Old Halkerton Road, Forfar, appeared at Perth Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to four charges of attempting to send written sexual communications and images to five adults posing as girls aged between 12 and 15. The court heard that between July and August 2018, Rennie transmitted the explicit content from his home address and the Queen’s Hotel in Forfar. The digital accounts were decoys operated by an online child-protection group, Wolf Pack Hunters UK.
In August 2018, members of the group confronted Rennie outside his residence and broadcast the incident live on social media, attracting a public crowd and prompting a police response. Following a formal investigation, prosecutors brought charges resulting in his guilty pleas. Sheriff Alastair Brown deferred final sentencing to allow preparation of background reports, while considering the circumstances of the group’s operation and assessing ongoing risk.
In addition to facing deferred sentencing for his offences, Rennie was placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
He remains subject to statutory notification requirements and public protection monitoring to manage future risk and safeguard the public.
