In 2021, Glen Mills, a then 36-year-old man from Walker, was sentenced to 18 years in prison following a Northumbria Police investigation into serious sexual offences committed against a schoolgirl.
Glen Mills, of Crawford Terrace, Walker, was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court to 18 years behind bars, with an extended licence period of five years. His conviction followed a trial where a jury found him guilty of one count of rape and five counts of sexual assault. The court heard that the brave young victim provided crucial evidence to officers and testified during legal proceedings from a remote court suite, enabling prosecutors to secure convictions despite Mills denying the charges throughout.
Officers praised the victim’s immense courage in reporting the abuse to law enforcement. A judge remanded Mills in custody before sentencing, noting the severity of the offences and the need for long-term public protection. In addition to his custodial sentence, the court imposed strict monitoring measures to ensure public safety and to oversee his conduct following his eventual release from prison.
In addition to his extended 18-year prison term, Mills was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
He was also made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to place strict, lifelong restrictions on his movements and activities upon release from custody.
