In 2021, Phillip Bassett, a then-38-year-old man from Dover, was jailed following a Kent Police investigation initiated by a report from a commercial printing company.
Phillip Bassett, of Dover, was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on 16 June 2021 to 12 years and nine months in prison, alongside an extended licence period of five years and three months. His conviction followed guilty pleas to 15 offences, including two counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, two counts of assault by penetration, and multiple counts of making, taking, and possessing prohibited digital media. The court heard that a printing service alerted law enforcement in July 2020 after its staff identified illicit content in a custom order that Bassett submitted.
Detectives from the Paedophile Online Investigation Team subsequently executed a search warrant at his home, seizing mobile devices that contained digital recordings of severe abuse. Forensic examination and interviews confirmed that Bassett also used dark web networks to access and order illicit material. Officers commended the printing firm’s prompt action, which enabled police to safeguard victims and secure irrefutable digital evidence for prosecution.
In addition to his extended custodial sentence, Bassett was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
He was also made subject to strict court-ordered restrictions, including a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), ensuring comprehensive ongoing monitoring upon his eventual release.
