In 2026, Oliver Shoesmith, a 33-year-old man of no fixed address, was jailed following a British Transport Police investigation into repeated public exposure offences.
Oliver Shoesmith was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court on Monday, 13 July 2026, to 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of exposure. The court heard how Shoesmith targeted lone female passengers on train services operating between Guildford and Farnham, as well as routes between Brighton and Bedford. During these journeys, he specifically selected seats near women despite empty seats being available elsewhere.
He then unzipped his clothing to expose himself and engage in deliberate acts of self-gratification while looking directly at his victims. His actions caused severe distress, prompting a passenger to scream for assistance before railway staff intervened, and Shoesmith fled at Burgess Hill. Officers launched an investigation using CCTV footage and witness statements to identify the suspect.
Shoesmith, who has previous convictions for sexual assault and exposure, was linked to these offences while serving time in custody for separate matters. Officers interviewed him at HMP Five Wells in November 2025, during which he admitted to his full involvement in both incidents.
In addition to his custodial sentence, Shoesmith was handed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). The court order aims to closely monitor his future behaviour and protect members of the public upon release.
