In 2022, a Manchester man, then 62 years old, William Trevor Smith, was imprisoned for setting up a meeting to rape what he believed to be a child when, in reality, police were ready to apprehend him.

To meet and rape what he believed to be a ten-year-old child, William Trevor Smith from Manchester travelled a considerable distance to Gloucester.

In actuality, Smith had been in contact with the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) police, who are tasked with locating and looking into dangerous criminals who target minors online.

He was then accused of both violating a sexual harm prevention order and planning the conduct of a child sex offence.

A violent individual was imprisoned as a result of the SWROCU and Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Public Protection Unit working together on this case.

Smith was sentenced to seven years and four months in prison at Gloucester Crown Court last Friday, December 9, 2022, after pleading guilty to the charges.

Additionally, he was deemed dangerous and granted an extended licence, bringing the total to 11 years.

He also received a concurrent term of 29 months in prison for violating a sexual harm prevention order.
