In 2026, the Offender Register reported that Jamie Smith, 21, of Christchurch, was spared jail at Bournemouth Crown Court despite downloading extreme images of babies being abused. Smith began searching for the material aged 16 during lockdown, eventually accumulating over 200 indecent images of children ranging from newborns to 17-year-olds.

The National Crime Agency traced his activity, and a raid on his home uncovered phones and tablets containing 45 Category A images and extreme pornography. Chat logs revealed Smith told another predator online that he liked “any age… the younger the better” and admitted distributing a Category A video. A judge handed him a suspended sentence.

STATUS AND CASE DETAILS 2026
Legal Status: CONVICTED (Pleaded guilty to possession and distribution of indecent images of children and extreme pornography).

Custodial Status: SPARED JAIL (Handed a suspended prison sentence in June 2026).

Device Discovery: 257 total images/videos recovered across hardware, including Category A, B, and C files.

Judicial Oversight: Sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court; investigated by Dorset Police.

Offender Origin: Christchurch, Dorset.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Is a suspended sentence appropriate for a young offender who distributed Category A videos and openly stated they preferred the victims to be as young as possible?
