A male individual, Joseph Faulkner North Leigh Rapist, who sexually assaulted a female individual he encountered during an evening social event has been sentenced to a period of imprisonment lasting eight and a half years.

Joseph Faulkner, a 40-year-old individual, asserted throughout his trial that any sexual engagement with his victim was consenting. However, he contended that due to the substantial quantity of alcohol he had consumed, his physiological abilities were hindered, preventing them from engaging in sexual intercourse.

In May, the jurors at Oxford Crown Court dismissed his defence and found him guilty of rape, as well as two further charges of sexual assault.

During his sentence hearing, prosecutor Matthew Walsh presented an impact statement on Thursday (July 27) in which the victim expressed her hope that the case will prevent Joseph Faulkner from committing similar heinous acts in the future.

Additionally, she expressed optimism that she would now be able to make progress in her life.

Joseph Faulkner, residing at Park Close in North Leigh, received a prison term of eight-and-a-half years from Judge Maria Lamb. The judge informed him that he would be incarcerated for two-thirds of the sentence before being available for parole.

“That night, I am convinced that your victim clearly expressed to you on multiple occasions that she had absolutely no sexual attraction towards you,” Judge Lamb stated.

Regrettably, you chose to exploit the circumstance of being near [your victim] when she was preparing to retire for the night.

“After reviewing the evidence, I am confident that she was either asleep or under the influence of alcohol. Given her circumstances, it is important to recognise that she is considered particularly vulnerable according to the legal authorities.”

The judge remarked, “The victim has endured substantial harm.”

According to Judge Lamb, the woman’s use of anti-depressant medicine had negative consequences on her relationship with her boyfriend and affected her ability to enjoy her pregnancy.

In May, the jury was informed that the victim and the defendant had encountered each other while socialising at the Woodman pub in North Leigh in 2019.

He accompanied her to a flat, making romantic moves towards her. According to the court, she simulated sleep and even imitated snoring to deceive Faulkner.

Rónán McCann informed the judge on Thursday that his client and the man’s family had made several efforts to write letters to the judge to mitigate.

“The barrister stated that it is impossible to adequately convey the profound effect of the current circumstances on them,” Faulkner had much compassion for his mother, who experienced poor physical condition.

Due to the imposed prison sentence, the defendant, Joseph Faulkner, will be permanently listed on the sex offender registry.
