James Lewis Violent and Remorseless Oxford Child Abuser

In 2015, the Offender Database reported that James Lewis, then 25, of Carter Close, Oxford, Oxfordshire, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. On Monday, 9 November 2015, Lewis appeared at Oxford Crown Court for sentencing after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to a baby.

The investigation established that in December 2013, Lewis shook an infant at a property in Oxford, causing “serious” injuries. Medical examinations revealed the child suffered bleeding to the brain, retinal bleeds, and 10 fractured ribs. Lewis was arrested by Thames Valley Police on 15 December 2013 and subsequently charged in August 2014. While the infant survived the “reprehensible” assault, the prosecution reported that the child required long-term medical monitoring following the “vile” incident.

Judicial Findings and Investigative Detail

The court reported that the injuries inflicted by Lewis were of the highest severity. Detective Constable Patricia Coyne noted that the case was “distressing” for all involved, but the 10-year sentence reflected the “serious” nature of the physical trauma. The judge noted that the baby’s recovery was ongoing, but the long-term neurological impact remained a significant concern. The prosecution emphasised that Lewis had “dishonestly” denied the charges, leading to a full trial in July 2015, where a jury found him guilty.

The judge noted that the custodial term was intended to protect the most vulnerable members of society from such “vile” outbursts of violence. The prosecution emphasised that the medical evidence regarding the fractured ribs and brain bleeds was a fundamental factor in the “serious” sentencing. For his crimes in Oxford, the court determined that Lewis posed a “reprehensible” risk to children and required significant supervision.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his crimes in England, James Lewis was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: 10 years in immediate custody.
  • Conviction: Found guilty of grievous bodily harm (GBH).
  • Barring List: Subject to permanent placement on the DBS Children’s Barred List.
  • Judicial Oversight: Sentenced at Oxford Crown Court.

2026: Monitoring and Public Protection

Lewis is now managed by the Probation Service and Thames Valley Police following his release from prison. Due to the “serious” nature of the physical abuse he inflicted on an infant in Oxford, his management is subject to oversight by the Public Protection Unit.

Authorities in Oxfordshire state that while Lewis has served his custodial term, he remains under “serious” supervision. Any “reprehensible” behaviour, attempts to contact the victim, or efforts to access vulnerable women and children in Oxford or elsewhere will result in immediate intervention. As a person on the Barred List, any attempt to work or volunteer with children is a criminal offence. The Probation Service maintains a “serious” watch on his activities to ensure he does not repeat his “vile” past behaviour.
