In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Ryan Morison, then 32, of Riverside, Chichester, West Sussex, was sentenced to 30 months in prison at Portsmouth Crown Court. Morison was observed in a state of shock, repeatedly asking, “Am I going to prison?” as the court detailed his systematic campaign of grooming and his obsession with child abuse material.
The investigation established that Morison was identified in 2017 after striking up an online relationship with a man who was streaming live broadcasts of himself abusing his own children. During these “sadistic” conversations, Morison admitted to being aroused by the distress of infants. When police raided his home in September 2017, the defendant became hysterical, claiming he was “lonely” and had made a “mistake.”
Grooming Tactics and Digital Evidence
South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) officers seized an iPad, phone, and desktop computer, revealing hundreds of graphic images and search terms targeting “very young boys.” Morison had also been involved in live chats where he sent pictures of his genitalia and detailed what he intended to do to boys as young as 13, using predatory phrases like “you are hot” to attempt to seduce them into sexual intercourse.
The forensic discovery reported a significant collection of illegal material:
- Making/Possessing: 126 category A, 137 category B, and 274 category C images.
- Distribution: Morison had shared 86 category A, 110 category B, and 131 category C images with others online.
- Prohibited Material: 14 prohibited images were also identified.
Sentence and Statutory Requirements
Recorder Michael Bowes QC sentenced Morison to 30 months in immediate custody. The defendant pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images, three counts of distribution, one count of possession, and two offences of attempting to engage in sexual activity with a child. He was handed:
- Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements for life.
- SHPO: A 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order severely restricting his access to children and internet-enabled devices.
- Custodial Term: Immediate imprisonment at HMP Portsmouth or a similar facility.
Monitoring and Public Protection
Morison is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Sussex Police. His history of engaging in sadistic discussions regarding the abuse of infants and his active grooming of teenagers mean his status remains under critical scrutiny.
As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Morison must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his address in Chichester, West Sussex. Police state that the link between Morison and the live-streaming offender highlights the extreme danger he posed to the community. Any breach of his 10-year SHPO or his registration conditions following his release will result in his immediate return to Portsmouth Crown Court.
