In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Henry Heaton, then 91, died one year into a 10-year prison sentence. Heaton, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, and living in Chester Close, Runcorn, Cheshire, at the time of his conviction, died at Aintree Hospital on 19 March 2019.

The investigation established that Heaton was a “predatory” paedophile who targeted a six-year-old boy in 1960s Huyton, Merseyside. Heaton “viciously” exploited the fact that the child was being neglected and beaten by his parents, grooming him with sweets and cinema trips. The “horrific” abuse, which included rape and being forced to perform sex acts in cinema toilets and private addresses, only ended years later when the boy was old enough to run away.

Impact and Victim Statement

The court heard that the “depraved” trauma of the offences led the victim into a life of severe substance abuse, including heroin. In a “harrowing” statement read to Liverpool Crown Court, the victim reported:

“He stole my childhood and the rest of my life as well. I will never be rid of the horrible things he did to me… I don’t want him to die thinking he got away with what he has done.”

The victim eventually managed to overcome his addiction through counselling, but reported that he still suffers from “bad thoughts” and flashbacks of the “vile” attacks.

Sentence and Judicial Proceedings

In May 2018, Heaton was convicted of 15 counts of indecent assault following a week-long trial. Due to his “poor” health, Heaton collapsed in the dock during sentencing, leading Judge Gary Woodhall to finish the proceedings in his absence.

Judge Woodhall emphasised that the victim was an “easy target” because he was seeking the attention he lacked at home. For his “evil” crimes in Merseyside, Henry Heaton was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: 10 years in immediate custody.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were imposed (effectively for life).

Death in Custody and Inquest

Heaton spent his final months on the medical wing of HMP Liverpool due to a range of complex conditions, including colon cancer, vascular dementia, and the after-effects of a stroke. An inquest at Gerard Majella Courthouse, Kirkdale, Merseyside, reported that his health deteriorated significantly in early 2019.

Coroner Andre Rebello recorded a verdict of death by natural causes, with the primary causes identified as pneumonia and kidney damage. Despite his death, the sentencing ensured that Heaton was held accountable for his “systematic” abuse before his passing.
