In 2024, the Offender Database reported that James Denholm, then 34, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison at Aberdeen Sheriff Court. Denholm, an electrician, carried out a “sickening” 10-year campaign of voyeurism, secretly filming women in their bedrooms and bathrooms across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.

The investigation by Police Scotland established that Denholm utilised his professional position to gain access to homes. His “alarming” pattern of behaviour between 2013 and 2023 involved:

  • Secret Filming: Recording women showering, changing, and using the toilet.
  • Non-Consensual Sex Tapes: Filming himself having sex with women without their knowledge.
  • Intrusive Stalking: Taking photos and videos from outside victims’ homes and filming into first-floor bedrooms.
  • “Bizarre” Behaviour: Entering a victim’s home with a sex doll and lingerie, dressing it in her clothes, and taking photographs.
  • Child Abuse Imagery: Admitting to taking or making indecent images of children between 2007 and 2012.

Detection and Victim Impact

The crimes were uncovered last year when a woman found a recording device hidden under her bed. A subsequent search warrant of Denholm’s property revealed a “vile” amount of footage involving 17 different people. One victim reported suffering from panic attacks and now “viciously” checks every nook and cranny of her home for cameras.

Sheriff Graham Buchanan emphasised that custody was the only appropriate disposal, noting the significant psychological harm caused. Although the defence mentioned a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, the court reported that this did not excuse the “appalling” violation of privacy and breach of trust.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his “depraved” crimes in Aberdeenshire, James Denholm was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: Two years and eight months in immediate custody.
  • Extended Supervision: An additional two years and six months of supervision upon his release.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were imposed (likely for life, given the nature of the offences).
  • Professional Barring: Given his “vicious” use of his trade to access victims, he is subject to strict restrictions regarding working in private residences.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Denholm is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Police Scotland. His status remains under “critical” scrutiny due to the decade-long duration of his offending and his “systematic” invasion of private spaces.

As a registered sex offender, Denholm must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his address in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, and his possession of any devices capable of recording imagery. Police Scotland states that this conviction serves as a warning that digital voyeurism is treated with extreme seriousness. Any breach of his supervision terms or registration will result in his immediate return to Aberdeen Sheriff Court.
