In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Dennis Wakefield, then 58, of Snugborough Avenue, Union Mills, was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison at Douglas Courthouse in January 2023. Wakefield, a former school caretaker and Special Constable, pleaded guilty to four counts of gross indecency with a child, two counts of indecent assault, and six counts of possessing indecent images.
The investigation established that Wakefield assaulted two girls, aged between five and eight, over a six-year period between April 2016 and June 2022. The abuse was uncovered after one victim made comments during a school lesson that prompted a teacher to report concerns. Following his arrest, a search of his home uncovered 568 indecent images on his phone, laptop, iPad, and hard drive, with some material dating back to 2014.
Position of Trust and Impact
The court reported that Wakefield had a “spectacular fall from grace,” having served as a Special Constable for 12 years and worked with the Army Cadets. During questioning, he initially denied the abuse and refuted any interest in children, though he later admitted his actions were “reprehensible.”
In a video played to the court, one victim described Wakefield as an “awful man.” She reported suffering from panic attacks and constant anxiety, particularly when seeing older men who resembled her abuser. Deemster Graeme Cook stated that Wakefield had “taken away the innocence” of the girls and subjected them to “experiences no child should ever experience.”
Sentence and Registration Requirements
For his crimes in Union Mills and the hearing in Douglas, Dennis Wakefield was:
- Sentenced to five years and eight months in prison.
- Placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
- Handed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).
The SOPO restricts Wakefield’s contact with children and his access to electronic devices and the internet. Upon his eventual release, he is also required to notify authorities before any travel.
Monitoring and Public Protection
Wakefield is managed under public protection arrangements by the Isle of Man Constabulary. His status as a “reprehensible” predator who abused a position of trust remains under scrutiny.
As an indefinite member of the Sex Offenders Register, Wakefield must comply with notification requirements for the rest of his life. The Isle of Man Constabulary states that they will continue to investigate any reports of child exploitation to ensure the safety of the community. Any breach of his SOPO or registration conditions will result in his immediate return to Douglas Courthouse.
