In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Edward Nicholas Gratwick, then 68, of Mitcham, South London, was jailed for life at Guildford Crown Court. Following a six-week trial, Gratwick was found guilty of 38 offences, including planning to travel overseas to rape children as young as six and 10 years old.
The investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA) established that Gratwick was arrested at Stansted Airport on 7 March 2025 after attempting to board a flight to Bucharest, Romania. Intelligence from international law enforcement partners revealed that Gratwick had arranged a meeting with an individual in Romania to sexually abuse a nine-year-old girl.
Encryption and Forensic Evidence
The court reported that Gratwick used encrypted applications, including Teleguard, aTox, and Session, to coordinate with offenders worldwide. He shared graphic messages and over 1,300 indecent images of children. On his devices, officers found bookings for an Airbnb in Bucharest and discussions about drugging victims with GHB and GBL, which Gratwick referred to as a “rape drug.”
Search of his home in Mitcham recovered:
- Controlled Substances: Bottles of Gamma Butyrolactone (GBL), a Class B drug.
- Travel Items: A small child’s sleeveless top, matching descriptions found in the chat logs.
- Indecent Images: 632 Category A images, the most severe classification.
Informer Revelation and Sentence
During the trial, it was revealed that Gratwick, known by the nickname “Radio Nick,” had been a police informer between 1995 and 2003, infiltrating environmental and animal rights groups. Gratwick used this history as part of his defence, claiming he had created a false persona to catch paedophiles. The jury dismissed this claim, and Her Honour Judge Harden-Frost stated that the defendant had been “unmasked” and described his actions as “the stuff of nightmares.”
For his crimes, Edward Gratwick was:
- Jailed for life.
- Ordered to serve a minimum of 19 years and 46 days in prison.
- Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Monitoring and Public Protection
Gratwick is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by the National Crime Agency and the Metropolitan Police. His status and digital history remain under scrutiny to ensure public safety.
As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Gratwick must comply with notification requirements for life. The NCA states that they will use every power to safeguard children from harm. Any future conduct or breach of registration conditions will result in his return to Guildford Crown Court.
