In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Mark Bellas, then 54, of Harebell Gardens, Houghton Regis, Dunstable, was sentenced to a total of 17 years at Swindon Crown Court. Bellas was arrested in Swindon in October last year after travelling from Bedfordshire with the intent to abuse a child.

The investigation by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) revealed that Bellas believed he was meeting a girl under the age of 13. Upon his arrival at the meeting point, he was intercepted and arrested by officers. At the time of this offence, Bellas was already on bail for an investigation by Bedfordshire Police regarding the distribution of indecent images.

Convictions and Previous Bail Status

Bellas pleaded guilty to the following counts:

  • Two counts of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence.
  • Attempting to cause or incite the sexual exploitation of a child.
  • Five counts of distributing indecent images of children.

The court reported that Bellas had been remanded in custody since his arrest last year. DI Dave Wells from SWROCU stated that the sentence reflects the severity of the intent to harm a child and the distribution of illegal material.

Sentence and Registration Requirements

For his crimes in Swindon and Bedfordshire, Mark Bellas was:

  • Sentenced to 12 years in prison with a five-year extended licence.
  • Placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
  • Subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

The judge at Swindon Crown Court handed down the sentence on 23 January 2026. Under the terms of the 17-year extended sentence, Bellas will be subject to supervision for five years following his release from the custodial portion of the term.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Bellas is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Wiltshire Police and Bedfordshire Police. His status and his residency in Houghton Regis remain under scrutiny.

As an indefinite member of the Sex Offenders Register, Bellas must comply with notification requirements for the rest of his life. SWROCU states that they remain committed to identifying and prosecuting individuals who target children through digital platforms. Any breach of his registration or licence conditions will result in his return to Swindon Crown Court.
