In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Peter Pottle, then 32, of Paper Mill Lane, Taverham, Norfolk, was jailed for four and a half years. The Court of Appeal overturned his previous suspended sentence on 22 January, following a referral by the Solicitor General under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

The investigation by Norfolk Constabulary revealed that Pottle began grooming his victim in 2016, shortly before her 13th birthday. The “serious” abuse started with online conversations and escalated to Pottle driving to meet the child near her home. He encouraged the teenager to share indecent images before sending “vile” pictures of himself and escalating his behaviour to physical sexual acts.

Persistent Abuse and Deception

The court reported that Pottle’s “despicable” behaviour did not end with the initial period of grooming. In 2020, he used a “vile” alias to re-contact the victim, sending further sexual messages and requesting images. He then threatened the victim, ordering her to delete the evidence of their communications to protect himself from discovery.

In a “serious” personal statement, the victim explained that she now struggles with trust and that her relationships with friends and family have been impacted by Pottle’s actions. Solicitor General Ellie Reeves MP emphasised that Pottle had “calculatedly groomed” the teenager and welcomed the court’s decision to replace the “lenient” suspended sentence with immediate “serious” jail time.

Sentence and Protection Orders

Following the appeal, for his “abhorrent” crimes in Taverham and Norwich, Peter Pottle was:

  • Sentenced to four years and six months in prison.
  • Subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for 10 years.
  • Handed a Restraining Order for 10 years.
  • Ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Pottle is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Norfolk Constabulary. His residency in Taverham, Norfolk, and his digital behaviour remain under the most “serious” level of scrutiny.

As a registered sex offender, Pottle must comply with notification requirements upon his eventual release. Norfolk Constabulary emphasise that its units work closely with national authorities to ensure “dangerous” predators receive “serious” punishments. Any breach of his 10-year SHPO or further “vile” digital behaviour will result in his immediate return to court.
