In 2024, the Offender Database reported that Thomas McCrystal, 51, was jailed at Grimsby Crown Court for a series of sexual assaults and the grooming of a young girl. McCrystal, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to causing or inciting a child into sexual activity and two further charges of sexual assault.

The investigation by Humberside Police uncovered the abuse after the victim’s mother checked her daughter’s phone. Officers found scores of messages revealing that McCrystal had been grooming the girl—who was under 16 at the time of the offences in 2020—by plying her with alcohol, offering money, and buying her gifts. The court reported that McCrystal had exposed himself to the girl and kissed her intimately during the “vile” attacks in North East Lincolnshire.

Victim Bravery and “Serious” Impact
The victim, who described the “serious” impact on her mental health, told the court that telling someone about the abuse felt as though a “huge weight was lifted.” She expressed her hope for justice to ensure McCrystal would not be able to harm another child.

Judge Gurdial Singh commended the victim for her immense courage. While the defence suggested that childhood difficulties in Northern Ireland during the Troubles served as mitigation, the judge dismissed these as excuses for his predatory “behaviour,” emphasising that the blame lay entirely with McCrystal.

Sentence and Lifetime Restrictions
For his crimes in Grimsby, Thomas McCrystal was:

  • Sentenced to a total of six years in prison.
  • Subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for life.
  • Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

The lifetime SHPO imposes strict, permanent prohibitions on McCrystal’s “behaviour,” including his use of the internet and his contact with minors, to ensure long-term public protection.

Monitoring and Public Protection
McCrystal is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Humberside Police. His history of grooming and sexual violence in North East Lincolnshire will be under lifelong scrutiny by specialist officers upon his eventual release.

Humberside Police emphasise that the “serious” management of registered sex offenders is a priority. Any attempt by McCrystal to bypass his notification requirements or contact children will result in an immediate return to custody. The force encourages parents to remain vigilant of their children’s digital communications to disrupt similar grooming attempts.
