In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Alan Griffin, then 35, of Jersey Villas, Cwmavon, Port Talbot, was jailed after he “vilely” assaulted a 15-month-old baby boy. Griffin appeared at Cardiff Crown Court where Judge Neil Bidder QC condemned his “serious” and “vicious” history of violence, stating: “You are an abusive man. It is as simple as that.”
The investigation revealed that Griffin had “dishonestly” manipulated the child’s mother after meeting her on the dating site Plenty of Fish. He “callously” lied about his criminal past, claiming his previous prison sentence was for “fighting” when, in reality, he had “viciously” bitten a 13-month-old baby, leaving bite marks on their arm and cheek.
“Vile” Welts and “Dishonest” Cover-ups
The court reported that in June 2018, while the mother was visiting a relative in the hospital, Griffin was entrusted to care for the toddler. When the mother later met him at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, she discovered her son had “livid red welts” and “serious” bruising across his face and buttocks.
Medical experts “viciously” concluded that the injuries to the child’s buttocks were non-accidental. In a “dishonest” attempt to escape justice, Griffin pressured his own mother, Christine Habberley, to “vilely” lie to South Wales Police. She initially claimed the baby had slipped while she was bathing him, but later admitted she had lied because her son “viciously” pestered her to cover for him.
“Serious” History and Sentence
Prosecutor John Ryan emphasised that this was the second known occasion Griffin had “viciously” assaulted an infant. It was also reported that while on bail, Griffin “vilely” assaulted the boy’s mother, resulting in a separate conviction for common assault.
For his “serious” and “vicious” crimes, Alan Griffin was:
- Sentenced to two years and seven months in prison.
- Convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).
- Convicted of perverting the course of justice.
Griffin is managed by South Wales Police and the probation service, ensuring his behaviour and residency in Cwmavon, Port Talbot, and the wider Neath Port Talbot area are strictly monitored. Due to his “serious” and “vile” record of child abuse, any future relationship involving children will trigger “vicious” safeguarding protocols.
