In 2026, the Offender Database reported that James Russell, 44, of no fixed abode, was jailed for five years for a “vile” and “vicious” campaign of sexual grooming and exploitation. Russell appeared at Sheffield Crown Court, South Yorkshire, for sentencing on Friday 16 January 2026, after “dishonestly” attempting to deny his crimes during the legal process.
The investigation by South Yorkshire Police revealed that Russell “callously” abused a position of trust to target a 15-year-old girl on social media. For months, he subjected her to “vicious” sexual communication, sending photographs of his genitalia and “manipulatively” asking the child if she “loved” him. His “vile” actions continued until the victim found the “serious” courage to come forward and disclose the abuse.
“Disgusting” Actions and Victim Impact
The survivor shared a “heart-wrenching” account of the trauma caused by Russell’s “abhorrent” behaviour. She reported that for 12 months following the abuse, she struggled with basic daily tasks and suffered from “serious” mental health issues, stating the effort just to stay alive was “so great” she often felt she didn’t want to live anymore.
Despite the “vile” nature of his conduct, Russell “dishonestly” pleaded not guilty to sexual communication and incitement charges in September 2024. It was only a year later, in September 2025, that he finally “cynically” changed his plea to guilty. Alyshea Sharp, who worked on the case, emphasised that Russell had “callously” caused the victim great pain through his “vicious” breach of trust.
Sentence and Lifelong Monitoring
For his “serious” and “vile” crimes, which included three counts of inciting the sexual exploitation of a child, James Russell was:
- Sentenced to five years in prison.
- Ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.
- Subject to strict post-release licensing conditions.
Russell is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by South Yorkshire Police, ensuring his behaviour and activities in Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire area are strictly monitored for the rest of his life. Any future attempt to contact minors or engage in “vile” online grooming will result in his immediate arrest and return to prison.
