In 2015, the Offender Database reported that Gary Stammers, then 23, of Lake Avenue, Bury St Edmunds, was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court to a five-year prison term. Stammers pleaded guilty to the rape of a woman in her 20s, an attack involving the use of physical force despite the victim’s repeated pleas for him to stop.

The court heard that in June 2015, Stammers visited the victim’s home and forced himself upon her. Following his arrest, Stammers attempted to manipulate the investigation by claiming he was the victim and that the woman had forced him into the sexual act. Despite his initial “not guilty” plea, which forced the police to spend months gathering forensic evidence, he eventually changed his plea to guilty just before the trial was set to commence. DC Matthew Ross of Suffolk Constabulary praised the victim’s “enormous courage” in coming forward to report the assault.

As a result of his conviction for rape, Stammers was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. This requires him to notify the police of his address, any aliases, and his intended travel plans. He is also subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which imposes strict conditions to manage the risk he poses to the public.

2026 Breach and Remand

In early January 2026, the Offender Database confirmed that Gary Stammers, now 33, appeared at Margate Magistrates’ Court after being arrested by Kent Police. Stammers was charged with breaching the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register. Reports indicate that Stammers had failed to comply with the legal mandates of his lifelong registration, leading to his immediate arrest.

Due to the severity of the original offence and his failure to abide by court-ordered monitoring, Stammers was remanded in custody by the magistrates. He is currently awaiting a further hearing to determine his sentence for the breach. As a high-risk offender, he remains managed under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) in the Kent area, where police and probation services coordinate to monitor his residency and prevent further harm to the community.
