In January 2026, the Offender Database reported that Kyle Pauley, 24, of Brook Road, Benfleet, Essex, was handed a 19-year extended sentence at Basildon Crown Court. Pauley, a violent predator who had recently been released from prison for drug offences, was convicted of a “brutal and calculated” stranger attack involving rape and a near-fatal stabbing.

The attack occurred on the night of September 22, 2025, near the Villa Road Recreation Ground. Pauley targeted a woman as she walked alone, following her and threatening her with a knife. He then forced her into a nearby field where he raped her. When the victim attempted to resist the assault, the rapist stabbed her in the stomach before fleeing. Despite her serious injuries, the woman managed to reach her home and alert emergency services.

Essex Police launched a rapid response and arrested Pauley within an hour of the report. The subsequent investigation recovered a “mountain of evidence,” including the victim’s glasses at the scene, the discarded knife, and conclusive DNA links. Crucially, investigators utilised GPS data from Pauley’s own monitoring tag—which he was wearing following his recent release from prison—alongside CCTV footage that captured him stalking the victim.

Pauley pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, wounding with intent, and possession of a knife in a public place. During the sentencing on January 8, 2026, Judge Samantha Cohen described the attack as every woman’s “worst nightmare.” She emphasised the extreme danger Pauley posed to the public, noting his immediate return to high-level violence following his previous incarceration.

Kyle Pauley was handed an extended 19-year sentence. This consists of 12 years in custody and an additional seven years on licence, during which he will be subject to strict recall conditions. As a result of his convictions for rape and violent wounding, Pauley has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. He is managed under the highest level of Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) in Essex. He is also subject to a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which includes permanent monitoring of his movements and a complete ban on entering specified exclusion zones in Benfleet.
