In 2017, the Offender Database reported that Graham Hackett, then 63, of Linton, Swadlincote, Derbyshire, was sentenced at Derby Crown Court.
Graham Hackett was jailed for 17 years after admitting to a catalogue of sexual offences against a girl under the age of 13. The court heard that the abuse was uncovered in June of the previous year when the victim courageously informed her family, leading them to confront Graham Hackett at his home.
When the family requested that Graham Hackett undergo a lie detector test to prove his innocence, he refused and subsequently took an overdose of tablets in a suicide attempt. The police were only alerted to the sexual abuse allegations by the medical staff who treated Graham Hackett following the overdose.
Following his arrest, police seized Graham Hackett’s laptop and tablet for forensic analysis. Investigators discovered that he had used Google to search for incriminating terms, such as “how to cheat a lie detector test,” “can lie detectors be used in court?” and “can you have personal possessions in prison?” This proved that he was anticipating his eventual capture.
Judge Shaun Smith QC told Graham Hackett that he had “ruined her young life” and highlighted the victim’s ongoing trauma, including constant nightmares. In addition to the lengthy 17-year prison sentence, Graham Hackett was ordered to remain on the sex offenders register for the duration of his life.
