This week, a third former paedophile officer of the South Yorkshire Police (SYP) has been apprehended as part of an inquiry by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) concerning allegations from survivors of child sexual exploitation and abuse in Rotherham involving SYP officers.
The ex-police constable, in his forties, was apprehended on Monday (31 March) on allegations of raping a teenage girl in Rotherham in 2004 and has been granted bail.
This followed the apprehension of two former SYP officers late last year on allegations of sexual offences and misconduct in public office. The misconduct was reported to have occurred when these former police, stationed in Rotherham, were both on and off duty, and allegedly took place between 1995 and 2002.
The inquiry is conducted by SYP’s major crime section under our supervision, following the initial notification of the issue when SYP submitted a complaint in October 2024.
This was succeeded by additional complaints from a second woman in November and grievances from two more ladies in December.
In late January, a fifth complainant was submitted to the IOPC, and this week we received a recommendation for a sixth complainant. The arrest this week pertains to the most recent complaint.
IOPC Director Emily Barry stated: “We are currently investigating grave allegations of sexual misconduct made by six women against former SYP officers.”
The complaints are being addressed with sensitivity and are under comprehensive investigation, and a third former officer has been arrested.
“Upon concluding the investigation, we will determine if a dossier of evidence will be submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for the consideration of criminal charges.”
