The drug used in the botched Texas execution is the sedative Pentobarbital.
After 30 years, Texas shifted from a traditional three-drug cocktail to a single dose of pentobarbital in July 2012 due to nationwide shortages of other components like pancuronium bromide and sodium thiopental.
The three drug execution consisted of the anaesthetic, the muscle relaxant, and the heart-stopping agent. Due to strict secrecy laws regarding execution logs, drug sources, and observer details, we never knew if that was humane or successful.
Pentobarbital has not been proven or tested to show that it would be a good choice for executions, but it is the cheapest drug available.
There have been several high-profile incidents of extreme physical suffering with Pentobarbital, including Eric Robert (South Dakota, 2012), Michael Lee Wilson (Oklahoma, 2014), and now Christa Pike (Tennessee, September 30, 2026).
Autopsies on executed prisoners have shown that rapid, high-dose intravenous injections of pentobarbital often result in significant pulmonary oedema. This triggers a chemical reaction that instantly fills the inmate’s lungs with fluid, giving them a drowning or suffocation-like feeling while they are still conscious.
If left unchecked, the buildup of fluid prevents oxygen from getting into the blood. This results in fast hypoxia, which can quickly induce catastrophic cardiac arrest or brain injury within minutes, hours, or even days.
Noises similar to snoring can be heard from the person with pulmonary oedema, often accompanied by rasping, rattling, or bubbling sounds, which may be what the witnesses to the Crista Pike Execution heard when the Prison Service had the curtain down in the Execution Chamber, trying to hide their incompetence.
Remember, at an execution, the medical personnel will be limited to prison staff. The persons who administer the drugs will be from third-party contractors. Therefore, there will be extremely limited medical knowledge at hand for when things go wrong, and it will definitely result in a group of people not knowing what to do running around behind the execution curtain, as reported by noises heard in the witness gallery.
Don’t worry, though, the prison service will come up with a BS story, and we will all lap it up.
