Trevor Bagnall, then aged 68, of Farthing Fields, Bordon, Hampshire, was sentenced to three years and nine months’ imprisonment at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday, 4 September 2026, after being found guilty of non-recent sexual offences against a child in Ashford, Kent.
The prosecution arose after the survivor made the brave decision to contact Kent Police to report the crimes, approximately 30 years after the abuse had taken place.
Detectives launched a detailed investigation into the historical disclosures, establishing that Bagnall had systematically groomed the young victim before carrying out repeated acts of sexual abuse between 1995 and 1999.
Officers arrested Bagnall in May 2020 and subsequently charged him with the offences.
Bagnall refused to accept responsibility, denied all criminal wrongdoing, and displayed zero remorse, needlessly forcing the survivor to relive the ordeal during a Crown Court trial.
Following deliberations, the jury returned guilty verdicts on:
- Gross indecency
- Sexually assaulting a child
In an impactful statement delivered to the court, the survivor described the devastating long-term consequences of the abuse, stating that while the trial brought legal proceedings to an end, the emotional trauma, loss of confidence, and impact on relationships would remain a lifelong burden.
Investigator Becki Pike commended the survivor’s exceptional fortitude throughout the inquiry, noting that Bagnall’s conviction was made possible solely through the victim’s bravery in coming forward to hold him accountable.
The presiding judge sentenced Bagnall to an immediate custodial sentence of three years and nine months (45 months).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing standard determinate sentences, Bagnall is required to serve one-half (22 and a half months) of his 45-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for automatic statutory release on licence. Upon release, Bagnall will serve the unexpired remainder of his sentence in the community subject to strict licence conditions and supervision by the Probation Service.
