Kenneth Newton, aged 57, and his partner Melanie James, aged 64, have both been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years at Stafford Crown Court following their convictions for the torture and murder of 28-year-old Rubin Blount.
The court heard that Rubin, who lived with severe learning disabilities and lacked the capacity to live independently, had been placed into the care of his stepbrother Newton and James at their residential address in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Rather than providing adequate safeguarding, the defendants subjected him to a protracted, sadistic regime of physical violence, sexual degradation, and systemic neglect.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Newton and James systematically withheld sustenance and hydration, starving Rubin to such an extreme extent that he was repeatedly reduced to foraging through household refuse bins for food scraps. The pair forced Rubin to exist in squalor, leaving him standing or lying in his own bodily waste in an unheated bedroom covered in heavy mould, which police investigators formally described as abhorrent. The couple routinely mocked his cognitive impairment and physical appearance, and forced him to remain standing upright in doorways for extended periods with the deliberate aim of causing him to faint from exhaustion.
Jurors were shown video recordings recovered from the defendants’ mobile phones, including footage captured on 2 November 2022. The trial judge noted that the recordings showed Rubin emaciated, stooped, gaunt, and completely broken, while Newton and James hurled verbal abuse at him while he was physically incapable of walking away or defending himself.
In November 2022, emergency services were finally called to the property after Rubin collapsed. Upon admission to hospital, he went into immediate cardiac arrest and succumbed to his injuries three days later. Medical examinations documented that Rubin weighed just 40 kilograms—approximately six stone—and presented with acute dehydration, profound malnutrition, and advanced pneumonia. Forensic pathology uncovered extensive trauma across his body, including spinal fractures, skin lesions, grazes, burn marks, and 50 rib fractures, 47 of which had been inflicted in the weeks immediately leading to his death.
Newton and James entered not guilty pleas, denying that they had caused Rubin physical harm. The jury rejected their assertions, concluding that the couple had inflicted repeated, unlawful violence with the intent to cause really serious harm.
The trial judge imposed mandatory life sentences on both defendants, setting the minimum term before parole consideration at 21 years each. As the sentences were delivered, a member of the public gallery called out to the dock telling the defendants to “rot in hell”. Under UK life sentence provisions, neither Newton nor James will be eligible to apply for release until their 21-year tariffs are fully served, and they will remain subject to lifelong licence supervision and immediate prison recall should they ever be discharged.
