In May 2021, child sex offenders Shazad Rehman and Bilal Hussain, both of Leeds, West Yorkshire, approached their statutory release dates following their 2013 convictions at Bradford Crown Court for the grooming and repeated rape of three young girls.
The criminal investigation established that the defendants targeted three school-aged victims in the Keighley area, collecting them in a silver Audi vehicle.
The court heard that Rehman and Hussain transported the children to hotels, including the Alder House Hotel in Batley and the Campanile Hotel in Bradford, where they supplied them with alcohol and cannabis to lower their inhibitions and render them incapable of resisting sexual assaults.
Prosecution evidence detailed how Rehman referred to the victims as “fresh meat” and claimed that grooming children at a young age allowed them to keep them indefinitely.
Jurors also heard evidence that the men had driven their car onto school grounds during class hours to search for young girls.
When one of the victims informed Hussain that she believed she was pregnant, he instructed her to terminate the pregnancy and threatened to kill the child himself.
Rehman and Hussain entered not guilty pleas to the indictment, but following two days of jury deliberations at Bradford Crown Court in 2013, both men were convicted of:
- Nine counts of rape
The trial judge sentenced Rehman to 18-and-a-half years’ imprisonment (222 months) and sentenced Hussain to 17-and-a-half years’ imprisonment (210 months).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing serious sexual offences, offenders are required to serve two-thirds of their determinate custodial term in prison before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence. For Bilal Hussain, the two-thirds threshold required 140 months (11 years and eight months) in custody, establishing an eligible release date on licence in May 2021. For Shazad Rehman, the two-thirds requirement amounted to 148 months (12 years and four months) in custody, establishing his release date on licence in November 2021, with both men remaining subject to licence conditions and community supervision for the remainder of their respective sentences.
