Jason Brown, aged 51, a convicted child sex offender who has reportedly operated under as many as 20 different aliases, has received a suspended prison sentence and a financial penalty at Lincoln Crown Court following his twelfth breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Brown, a former firefighter who has previously used the names Barry Coe and Seb Coe, holds a substantial record of sexual offending that includes sexual acts against children, indecent exposure, and inciting girls to engage in sexual activity. Over an extended period, Brown systematically fabricated identities to deceive women, concealing his criminal past from romantic partners. On one occasion, he adopted a partner’s surname to set up a social media profile at a time when he was under active police investigation for offences of rape and sexual assault.
The extent of his deception came to light when a partner discovered that the individual residing in her home was the subject of an ongoing rape prosecution under a name she had never encountered.
Under UK legislation, all victims of sexual offences are protected by lifelong statutory anonymity.
The latest breach arose after Brown was observed holding hands with a nine-month-old baby girl, an action that directly contravened the restrictions set out in his court-ordered Sexual Harm Prevention Order. During the court process, Brown was permitted to change his legal name mid-prosecution from Seb Coe. However, upon appearing for sentencing on Wednesday 30 September, he reverted to the name Jason Brown, prompting Judge Simon Hirst to query: “It is Mr Brown, is it?”
Sentencing Brown, Judge Hirst cited the statutory presumption against imposing immediate custodial sentences of less than 12 months where a sentence can be suspended in the community. Brown was handed a suspended prison sentence alongside a £500 fine, allowing him to remain in the community subject to the ongoing prohibitions of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order and registration on the Sex Offenders Register.
