In November 2022, Samuel Cortez, then aged 38, of Nether Street, North Finchley, was sentenced at Harrow Crown Court to nine years in prison after being convicted of child abduction and associated offences.
The court heard details regarding an investigation launched by the Metropolitan Police following an incident in North Finchley. Prosecutors outlined how Cortez approached an 11-year-old girl as she waited at a local bus stop. Cortez grabbed the young victim by her wrist while making statements suggesting he was armed with a knife, before forcing her into a nearby park.
Following the assault, Metropolitan Police detectives issued an urgent public appeal featuring CCTV images of the suspect. Two members of the public recognized Cortez from the published appeals and contacted law enforcement, enabling officers to locate and arrest him.
