A 67-year-old man from Cheshire caught in possession of child sexual abuse images spanning Category A, B, and C has received a suspended sentence at Chester Magistrates’ Court.

Robert Dickens, of Weaverham, Cheshire, appeared for sentence on Monday 5 October 2026 after pleading guilty to four offences relating to the downloading and possession of indecent digital content depicting children.

The court was told that a digital investigation led by Cheshire Constabulary uncovered indecent files across all three recognised statutory categories on devices linked to Dickens, including Category A images, the most severe classification under UK criminal law. Dickens accepted responsibility during proceedings, formally entering guilty pleas to all charges.

Under the provisions of Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, all child victims and individuals entitled to statutory protection are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, or images capable of leading to the public identification of protected parties is strictly prohibited under UK law.

Dickens entered guilty pleas to:

  • One count of possessing indecent photographs of children
  • Three counts of making indecent photographs of children

Passing sentence, District Judge Ian Barnes imposed an eight-month custodial sentence suspended for 12 months, allowing Dickens to serve the penalty in the community subject to statutory conditions.

Alongside the suspended sentence, the court ordered:

  • Completion of 200 hours of unpaid community work
  • Mandatory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years under the Sexual Offences Act 2003
  • Statutory supervision requirements during the operative period of the order
