A 57-year-old man has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment at Peterborough Crown Court after being found guilty of twice sexually assaulting a woman by penetration when she called at his accommodation to check on his welfare.

Richard Kemp, of no fixed address but known to frequent the Huntingdon area, appeared for sentence on Thursday 8 October 2026 following an inquiry by Cambridgeshire Police.

The court was told that the incident occurred on 9 May 2023 when the victim attended to verify Kemp’s welfare. Kemp was intoxicated and began directing verbal abuse towards her. As the woman attempted to depart, Kemp grabbed her from behind, pulled her hair, and subjected her to a sexual assault by penetration.

Kemp briefly ceased the attack, stating to the victim that he had forgotten who he was assaulting. When she attempted to break free a second time, Kemp subjected her to another assault by penetration. The woman eventually managed to escape the property and sought refuge at the home of an acquaintance.

In the days following the assault, Kemp sent text messages to the victim offering an apology while stating that he had enjoyed the assault. The next day, he sent an additional communication indicating he would capitulate if she decided to contact the police. Five days after the offences occurred, Kemp arrived at Parkside Police Station in Cambridge in an intoxicated state and informed desk officers that he had sexually assaulted a woman earlier that month.

Despite his initial admissions, Kemp pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault by penetration. Following a trial in August 2026, a jury rejected his defence and convicted him on both counts.

Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992 and Section 49 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933, all victims and complainants connected to sexual offence proceedings are protected by automatic, lifelong statutory anonymity. Publishing, broadcasting, or disseminating any details, names, addresses, workplaces, or photographs capable of leading to public identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.

Kemp was convicted of:

Two counts of assault by penetration

Passing sentence on 8 October 2026, the Crown Court judge handed Kemp an immediate custodial term of five years’ imprisonment.

Alongside the custodial sentence, the court ordered:

Mandatory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register under the Sexual Offences Act 2003

Formal post-custody licence supervision conditions upon release from prison
